Aims and objectives
This is a short, fun activity to help pupils with their sight vocabulary
and place words into recognisable contexts. The words are taken
form the NLS high frequency words YR to Y2.
Previous knowledge
Pupils will need to have a basic sight vocabulary although, working
with an adult, the sentences and words can read out from which the
pupil can then make their choices.
In the classroom
Pupils are encouraged to read a short sentence which has a missing
word. They click on the word from the coconut shy that they think
will make the sentence complete. A beanbag knocks the word over
and, if they are correct, they win a teddy bear but if they are
wrong, they lose a chance. The aim of the game is to collect 3 teddies
and then move on to the next level. At the end of each level a certificate
can be printed.
If used with an interactive whiteboard, the whole class can participate
in the activity which will allow and encourage pupils to talk about
the words, sentences and choices and engage in the game.
