The
Garner was the best place to store corn because it was the driest part of the
Mill. It was also more difficult for rats to get at the corn as the ladders
would be pulled up at night and as many as three cats kept there to keep vermin
at bay. On the left of the building is the blade grinding shop and the old cottage
that the miller lived in during the 19th century. Waterpower was used to grind
sword blades and to bore gun barrels from1800-1850. There is a model of a man
at work at the grindstone putting the finishing touches to a file. This work
often caused diseases affecting the lungs as these workers wore no masks to
  protect them.
