Aims and objectives
The activity aims to support student knowledge and understanding
in the use of co-ordinates to describe position.
Previous knowledge
To immediately interact with the resource students will need to
have an understanding of how co-ordinates are described and interpreted
in terms of the ‘x’ and ‘y’ axes. For students
without this prior knowledge, the ‘Help’ page will need
to be accessed first which will explain, in very straight forward
and accessible terms, the basic principles of co-ordinates.
In the classroom
This activity can be used to support Year 6 and 7 work on Shape
and Space. It can also be used to support work on Algebra where
pupils are beginning to plot co-ordinates in the creation of graphs.
There are eight games to choose from. When a game is selected a
point will be circled on the grid. Students are asked to enter the
co-ordinates of this point into the answer box and click the 'Check'
button. If the answer is correct another co-ordinate point will
be displayed. There are ten questions in each game.
To support student development and provide guidance about co-ordinates
click on the ‘Help’ button for additional information.

As an extension to this activity, an accompanying
activity called ‘Co-ordinate shapes’ is also available.
The first 5x5_grid.pdf contains a large numbered 5 x 5 grid
which can be copied onto a transparency for use with an OHP
or printed and laminated to create wipe-clean reusable resource.
The second 5x5_blank_grid.pdf contains a blank grid for use
as above and the third blank_grids.pdf contains a set of smaller
grids which can be used as handouts.
