Complaints have been received about the distances involved in walking around Hainton Zoo.
Below is a map of the pathways around the zoo, which visitors must stick to.

Task

Find the entrance, describe 3 different ways of getting to the Lion's Den.

You are at the cafe, find the shortest route to visit the Deer. How far is it?

From the Giraffe's find the shortest route to the Monkey's.

Two children need the toilet. They are in the Camel's den! Give them directions to find the toilets which are in the cafe. You will need to find the quickest route, won't you!!

An extra task

If you were to walk all of the way around the outside of the zoo, but do not visit the cafe, Giraffes or crocodiles how far will you have walked in total?

Task

  1. By only walking all around the outside of the zoo, how far would you have walked? Give your answers in:
      1. Meters
      2. Kilometres
  2. At sometime on your journey in (a) you decide to stop and get an ice-cream from the cafe, what's the minimum distance that will be added to your journey?
    Can you find the maximum distance?
  3. The Head Zoo Keeper decides to research the shortest distance that must be walked in order to visit all od the animals enclosures and the cafe. He must start and finish at the entrance. You may need to visit some places twice. Can you help him?

 

 

 

An extra task

The Hippos are breeding and are not to be disturbed! Their enclosure is therefore out of bounds. How would this affect you chosen route, still enabling you to visit all of the other animals?
