Stage 3 Wordswork!
What's in a Word?
Wouldn't it be easy if we could say 'this word is a noun and that word
is a verb', and know that it would always be right! But words aren't
like that. Many words can be quite different types according to how
they are used.
Activity 1
Work with a partner to explore the different uses of the word shop
in the list below.
Cut the list of words on worksheet 1a into slips, and place the
slip with the heading shop at the top of worksheet 1b.
Take it in turns to look at each of the slips:
Is the word shop used as a noun, a verb or an adjective?
Place your slip in one of the boxes on worksheet 1b.
As you place each slip, explain why it goes in that box.
Continue until all the slips have been placed.
Look at the slips in each box. Are there any
differences in the way the word shop is used? For example it might
be past or present, singular or plural. Describe the differences to
each other.
