Literacy problems to solve for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 Word Grid To play: Print out and colour 3 connecting squares to make a word. How many can you make? You can go up, down and diagonally, but they must touch and you can use each letter only once.
Wizard
The bits and pieces game The object of the game is to score points by making words from stems, prefixes and suffixes:
Each card has a stem, a prefix or a suffix written on it. Letters in brackets on the cards can be used or not used at the player's discretion. The -ly l -li- cards can be used for either -ly or -li-. There are six wild cards: two are marked !suffix! and can be used for any suffix. Two are marked !prefix! and can be used for any prefix. Two are marked !wild! and can be used for any stem, prefix or suffix. Cut up the cards below and deal ten cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in a pile on the table and place the top card face-up next to the pile to form the pool. On their turn, each player must take one card from the pile. They may then make as many words as they can, using the cards in their hand as well as any cards in the pool. Any words they make should be placed face-up in front of them. If they cannot make any words they must discard one card from their hand face-up into the pool. If the pool is emptied the top card from the pile should be turned over to replenish it. On their turn, players may also make words by adding to existing words they have made or adding to a word made by another player. If they add to a word made by another player, they can 'adopt' the word and take it from the other player. If they adopt a word which includes a wild card they can change the meaning of the wild card provided that it still forms words. Play ends when one player has used all their cards. They score three points for ending the game. These three points are added to their score from the words they have made. The winner is the player with the most points at the end of the game. If the pile of cards runs out before the end of the game players will be unable to pick up a card to start their turn. However, they should play on as usual, remembering to discard one card at the end of their turn. A player does not receive three points for ending the game if they end the game on a discard. They only receive the three points if they have made a word in their last turn.
